Beginning with multi-factor authentication
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) or two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra level of security. When accessing your account through multi-factor authentication, you will first enter your password, followed by a prompt for another verification method to confirm your identity. You can either approve the alert sent to the Microsoft Authenticator or input the one-time password (OTP) that the app generates. The OTP has a countdown of 30 seconds. This feature ensures that time-sensitive OTPs are never reused, eliminating the need to memorize them. Additionally, the OTP does not require an internet connection and will not drain your device's battery. You can include multiple accounts in your app, even those not associated with Microsoft, such as Facebook, Amazon, Dropbox, Google, LinkedIn, GitHub, and more.
Starting with passwordless access
Log into your Microsoft account using your phone instead of a password. Simply input your username and then approve the notification sent to your mobile device. Your fingerprint, face ID, or PIN acts as an additional security measure in this two-step authentication process. After successfully signing in using two-factor authentication (2FA), you will have access to all your Microsoft services and products, including Outlook, OneDrive, Office, and more.

Beginning with autofill
The Microsoft Authenticator application can also assist in automatically entering passwords. To initiate the synchronization of passwords, including those stored in Microsoft Edge, log into the Passwords section within the Authenticator app using your personal Microsoft account. Set Microsoft Authenticator as your primary autofill service to enable password autofill for the applications and websites you visit on your mobile device. Your passwords will be secured through multi-factor authentication within the app. You will have to verify your identity using your fingerprint, facial recognition, or a PIN to access and autofill passwords on your smartphone. Additionally, you can transfer passwords from Google Chrome and various other password management tools.
Microsoft personal, work, or educational accounts
Your employer or educational institution may require you to download the Microsoft Authenticator when trying to access specific documents, emails, or applications. You will need to connect your device to your organization via the app and include your work or school account. The Microsoft Authenticator also enables certificate-based authentication by generating a certificate on your device. This functionality informs your organization that the login request originates from a device they trust, allowing for smooth and secure access to more Microsoft applications and services without the need to repeatedly log in. Since Microsoft Authenticator offers single sign-on capabilities, after verifying your identity once, you won’t have to sign in again to other Microsoft applications on your device.
